Skylar Kathleen Kiehl

Age 19

Hopkins

January 3, 2026

Skylar Kathleen Kiehl, 19, was shot and killed inside her apartment in Hopkins on January 3, 2026. Skylar’s boyfriend, Krystofer Brooks, 20, is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. Skylar and Brooks had been dating for two years.

On the afternoon of January 3, Brooks called 911 and reported he

had shot his girlfriend in the head. Officers arrived and found Skylar on the bed with a gunshot wound through her eye. Brooks claimed that after pointing the gun at the window and pulling the trigger a few times, he turned toward Skylar and pulled the trigger again “to be sure it was unloaded.” He claimed Skylar sat up right as this happened, and the gun then went off. Brooks made several conflicting statements to police, which, combined with the position of Skylar’s body and the location of the blood in the room, led investigators to become suspicious of his account.

Skylar Kathleen Kiehl is remembered as “happy” and “a beautiful light.” Loved ones described her as “bubbly, kindhearted, funny and just a ray of sunshine.”

Ashley Kittelson

Age 35

International Falls

March 6, 2026

Ashley Kittelson, 35, was shot to death in her home in International Falls on March 6, 2026. Investigators believe Ashley’s husband, Nicholas Kittelson, 44, shot Ashley and then shot and killed himself.

On the morning of March 6, a deputy on routine patrol noticed a vehicle running in the driveway of Ashley’s home. The deputy recognized there was an active protection order involving Nicholas Kittelson, the owner of the vehicle, and Ashley. After attempting to make contact, police entered the home and found both Ashley and Nicholas deceased.

In an emergency protection order filed on February 27, Ashley wrote that Nicholas had a history of physically assaulting her, threatening to kill her, and putting a gun to her head. Nicholas Kittelson was soon charged with violating the order — once for trying to break into Ashley’s home, and again for calling her from jail. He also followed her in his vehicle and rammed her car, resulting in a domestic assault charge. On March 2nd, he was released from jail without bond.

Ashley Kittelson was described as “a devoted mother of three young children, a compassionate nurse, and a friend to so many. Anyone who knew her knew the warmth, kindness, and generosity she carried in her heart.” Loved ones shared that she dedicated her life to caring for others. We remember Ashley Kittelson.

Jennifer Marsaw and Marzai Dawson

Ages 44 and 5

Lexington

March 18, 2026

Jennifer Marsaw, 44, and her 5-year-old son Marzai Dawson were shot and killed in their home in Lexington on the morning of March 18. Irving Marsaw, 53, Jennifer’s husband, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder. He was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.

On March 18, one of Jennifer’s daughters called police after she and her siblings heard gunshots. First responders arrived at the home, where they found Jennifer deceased and Marzai injured. Marzai was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Irving Marsaw was hospitalized before being booked into jail. Jennifer’s daughter told police that the day before, Jennifer had kicked Irving out of the house for an argument during which he held a knife. Several hours before the shootings, Jennifer’s daughter overheard Jennifer tell Irving she was going to take him to trial.

Less than a day before Jennifer and Marzai were killed, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office secured a warrant for Irving’s arrest for strangling Jennifer on March 3rd, and a second warrant for his violation of a no-contact order in May 2025 involving another woman. Jennifer’s family stated that Irving had a history of beating and strangling Jennifer and threatening her and her children.

Jennifer had multiple harassment restraining orders and a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order (DANCO) against Irving at various points. In her harassment restraining order petitions, she wrote that Irving had threatened to hang her and kill her children. Jennifer’s family stated that Irving coerced Jennifer into having both harassment restraining orders dismissed. He also violated the DANCO at least twice.

Irving has a lengthy history of domestic and sexual violence against women and girls, including multiple domestic assault convictions, terroristic threats convictions, and a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge. This history dates back at least as far as 2004.

Jennifer Marsaw was described by loved ones as “a fun and outgoing woman” whose “greatest joy was spending time and making memories with her children.” Marzai Dawson, loved ones said, “will be remembered as a kind, gentle, humble boy whose smile could light up a room and loved being with his siblings and playing with toy cars and trucks.”
