Holding Space
Holding space is when we come together, to walk alongside each other without judgement. Creating space where we can share from the heart what we are experiencing and to practice spaciousness and graciousness with each other in order to sustain ourselves. The coalition is starting to create spaces like this and programs are and have created these spaces --- for staff, in support groups, with survivors. This page is providing resources that can help in creating these spaces of support.
Quick Exercises (5 min. or less)
This exercise can be done while seated or standing. Remind participants to move only in ways that feel comfortable to them. If something does not feel comfortable, they should not do.
In this exercise, you'll match how long you breathe in with how long you breathe out. Over time, you'll increase how long you're able to breathe in and out at a time.
Box breathing, also known as square breathing, is a technique used when taking slow, deep breaths. It can heighten performance and concentration while also being a powerful stress reliever. It’s also called four-square breathing. This technique can be beneficial to anyone, especially those who want to meditate or reduce stress.
